Less than half an hour drive from here, we live on the 13th floor, wrapped in plastic – walls covered with styrofoam insulation, pvc windows, sticky air and constant buzz of traffic noise.
Smart people live here in the village of Gornjane, where all houses are made from adobe and mud mortar. Nearby is the monastery from the 14th century.
It is peculiar how all these structures survived a heavy earthquake sixty years ago, unlike modern buildings in the Skopje valley where almost everything was demolished.
My mum was born in a house like this and she is always telling me what a fun was to make a muddy mixture for houses by treading.
Maybe someday we will move back closer to the ground where houses are natural, healthier and safer and air smells of fresh breeze.
